Who can apply to study at Stadin AO?

Stadin AO, Helsinki Vocational College and Adult Institute offers vocational education and training for young and adults alike, who either:

  • have completed comprehensive school and/or general upper secondary education. 
  • are already working and wish to enhance their skills and get formal qualification
  • want apprenticeship training. It is possible to complete vocational, further and specialist qualifications in all vocational fields through a training that takes mainly place at workplace and is supplemented with theoretical studies. 
  • need more preparatory instruction and guidance for vocational education
  • have recently moved to Finland and wish to get more guidance on the next steps in your education and employment opportunities.

What language skills are required?

All studies are conducted in Finnish with the exception of the Vocational Qualification in Tourism Industry, which is conducted in English.

Participation in general vocational education and training in Stadin AO, Helsinki Vocational College and Adult Institute requires you to have basic Finnish language skills. You can demonstrate your language skills by taking a language proficiency examination or test. Read more about demonstrating language proficiency on the Finnish National Board of Education website.

Studies at the Helsinki Vocational College and Adult Institute

Stadin AO, Helsinki Vocational College and Adult Institute offers a diverse range of different professional qualifications. You can choose your own path to more than 50 professions through vocational upper secondary qualifications, further vocational qualifications and specialist vocational qualifications and continuing vocational education. The TUVA Program – Preparatory Education and Training

The TUVA Program is for you if you

  • need support and/or counseling in order to move on to vocational or upper secondary school studies
  • need information on various study options and help in finding a suitable study place
  • have completed Finnish comprehensive school and wish to improve your grades in one or more subjects

The TUVA Program is a good choice if you want to improve your

  • study skills (mathematics, social studies, computer skills etc.)
  • Finnish as your second language
  • working life skills
  • everyday life skills

You can move on to either vocational or upper secondary school studies or other studies as soon as you have acquired the necessary skills.

The language of instruction is Finnish.

The TUVA Program is offered in various locations throughout Helsinki.

Preparatory education for basic education

Preparatory education is offered to young people who do not know enough Finnish or Swedish yet to be able to participate in a Finnish-language or Swedish-language study group. In preparatory education, the language and the subjects taught at school are studied according to the student’s skill level.

There is a continuous admission search for preparatory education.

Basic education for adults

Basic education for adults is for Helsinki residents aged 17–29. You can complete previously unfinished comprehensive school studies as open studies and receive a Basic education for adults certificate.
You can start the education at any time. There is a continuous admission for basic education for adults, and you apply directly to the educational institution.

Open studies

Open studies training can be started flexibly according to supply. Please note that open studies are short-term and part-time, so you may not be eligible for financial student benefits during your studies.

Youth workshops

There is a continuous admission for youth workshops directly, and you apply directly to the educational institution.

Continuous admission

Continuous admission enables flexible start of studies at Stadin AO, Helsinki Vocational College and Adult Institute all year round. The qualifications you are looking for and the starting dates for your studies vary.

Continuous admission is open to all applicants aiming to complete a vocational qualification or part of a qualification. If you have a previous vocational qualification or university degree, you can apply for a vocational qualification only in the continuous admission.

Joint application system

You can apply to Stadin AO, Helsinki Vocational College and Adult Institute as a student in the national joint application system in February-March for education starting in August. In the joint application system, you can apply for all programmes with one application form. You can find the application form and browse the vocational study options at Studyinfo.fi.

Admission for continuing groups

The admission for continuing groups is for you if you

  • want to complete your previously unfinished vocational upper secondary qualification
  • want to transfer to study at Stadin AO from another educational institution

Apprenticeship training

In order to participate apprenticeship training, you should have a self-acquired job. You can start an apprenticeship training at any time of the year.
